Kristen’s fellow Wedding Ace and bridal attire guru, Jessica, recently posted a fabulous inspiration board showcasing bridal hats in place of the traditional veil. Knowing our blog readers are always looking for unique wedding ideas, we thought we’d share Jessica’s inspiration board with you. (And doesn’t the darling hat featured in the bottom right corner of the board remind you of last week’s Real Weddings bride Nicole’s use of peacock feathers as her inspiration?) How will you be capping your bridal look – with a veil or a chic hat?

If you simply love the way a particular element of your wedding has turned out, (say, for example, your wedding invitations!) then consider using them as a spring board for designing the rest of your event. Check out these inventive cakes that beautifully mirror the designs of some of TGK’s most popular wedding invitations.

The delicate floral filigree motif on our best-selling Josie wedding invitation is intricately captured on the subtle, monochromatic pipings on this classic wedding cake.

The clean lines and striking contrasts of our glamorous Grace wedding invitation are highlighted with black ribbons-either real or frosted-on these chic cakes.

This non-traditional, sky-blue fondant cake is embellished with real seashells and starfish, just like our divine Coastal Ava Couture wedding invitation

Have you used your wedding invitation to inspire other design elements, such as your cake? If so, we’d love to see photos!

New 64-cent Butterfly Stamp Makes Wedding Mailings Easier

At this spring’s National Stationery Show, the USPS unveiled its very first stamp designed specifically for irregular-shaped mail. This is great news for brides who want to mail square and oblong envelopes that might be considered “oversized” and require postage beyond the standard 44-cent stamp. No longer will you have to stick a sad little 20-cent stamp next to your carefully chosen “Love” stamps!

Of course, it’s still a good idea to take a fully stuffed sample wedding invitation down to the Post Office to confirm the weight and correct postage before you buy stamps and mail your invitations off. But if 64-cents is what it will cost to mail your envelopes, the lovely Monarch Butterfly design is a nice new option!

Green Wedding Trends: Environmentally Friendly Wedding Party Gifts

Oh, the question of what to gift your bridesmaids and groomsmen! These gifts must accomplish so much: you want to thank these dear friends for all they’ve done for you; and it would be lovely if the gift were an appropriately “special” or even “meaningful” reminder of your wedding. Yet most couples are already operating at the outer limits of their wedding budgets when they set out to purchase multiple gifts for these key wedding party members!

So when we come across a gift idea that is 1) beautiful, 2) practical, and 3) well priced, not to mention 4) something both women AND men would be happy to have; 5) customizable to fit the personal style of each gift recipient; and 6) made of gorgeous recycled materials … we feel it is our bounden duty to report it far and wide!

Case in point, these lovely, handmade pouches. The designer, who works in the furnishings industry, was inspired to create these wee wallets as a savvy way to re-use the remnants and un-used samples of the high quality leathers her company was discarding. And we are so glad she did! Priced just under $22, the pouches are ideal for holding the bare essentials needed for a night on the town, a quick walk to the coffee shop, or for slipping into a gym bag.

Visit the Pouches By Page Web site to view their full selection of leathers and custom options. And surprise your wedding party with this delightfully modern, earth-friendly take on a classic necessity.

More Fun Beach Wedding Ideas

Lucky duck that I am, last weekend I got to attend my cousin’s oh-so-elegant beach-side wedding at the glorious Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Though the ceremony and reception site were decidedly formal, the beachy setting–and the couple’s laid-back style–called for casual, personal touches.

Upon entering the reception hall, we were invited to don a pair of flip flops, conveniently grouped by color and size in crisp white baskets. This display set the stage for an afternoon of dancing, merry making, and strolling the beachside lawn.

Guests choosing to wander outdoors to take in the coastal scene were met with baskets filled with straw fans and retro, 80’s style sunglasses.

The guests appreciated these funky and functional touches that doubled as wedding favors.

And check out this beautiful bride (my new cousin Tricia!) who pulled these fun ideas together and simply glowed radiance throughout the weekend!

After winning three (count ‘em, three!) coveted awards from the Triangle Bridal Association (or TBA) earlier this month, we didn’t think our heads could get any bigger. Turns out, we were wrong! TBA decided to puff us up a good deal more by featuring The Green Kangaroo as their “So Hot Right Now” Member of the Month! We love it! Check out what they’re saying about us (below) … we’re blushing!

SO HOT RIGHT NOW :: TBA Member of the Month

This month we are featuring the The Green Kangaroo who has just announced a special charitable promotion where 5% of all sales featuring the color blue would be donated to the Oceanic Preservation Society. April’s results are in and TGK is sending a donation to OPS! They’d like to thank their customers for rallying behind this organization to help preserve ocean life! Also, in honor of Earth Day, all products are now available for printing on 100% Recycled white paper! WOW! If this doesnt inspire you to “go green”...I’m not sure what will!

As we’ve mentioned, Kristen and Melissa are frequently featured on the awesome Wedding Aces blog as experts in the wedding stationery realm. But did you know there are “Aces” on that blog with excellent advice, ideas, and inspiration on all subjects relating to weddings? We got such a giggle from this article, posted by Ace Chris Garrow, that we had to share it with our TGK blog readers!

He writes of an inspired couple that wanted to inject a little non-conformist fun into their wedding by providing guests with kitchsy temporary tattoos to commemorate the day. Not sure if I’d do this at my wedding or not … but it’s a super fun idea! What do you think? Check out Chris’ full article here on the Wedding Aces site.

Looking for a little extra luck on your wedding day? Want a wedding date that your guests just can’t help but remember? While it will be hard to beat the overwhelming popularity of the lucky 7-7-07 wedding date, 2010 does bring the opportunity for a Sunday wedding on 10-10-10. Not too shabby!

And, if you are planning well in advance – Saturday, September 10th, of next year offers a cool “count down” date of 9-10-11. Have any other ideas? Please share!

One tip for those of you seeking cool wedding dates – you may want to consider booking your vendors extra early since these dates fill up fast!

Sustainable Wedding Favors

April 28th, 2010

In Fashion and Trends

One of our favorite “green wedding” trends is the smart idea of creating one-of-a-kind centerpieces out of several small potted plants that serve double-duty as favors for your wedding guests. We love the endless possibilities for customizing this trend to suit your individual wedding style! Here are some tips on working this idea to complement the tone of your wedding day.

1) Select a plant with meaning. “Floriography” is a time-honored tradition of associating flowers with nuanced meanings. When selecting the plants you’ll present to your guests, it can be fun to consider the message that flower will send.

A quick Internet search will turn up dozens of articles and “plant dictionaries” to help you decipher the language of flowers. Some appropriate wedding choices are the herb rosemary (for remembrance), pansies or violets (that tell friends they are in your thoughts), spearmint (for warm feelings), and bellflowers (for gratitude).

Use meaningful plants alone or in combinations to convey just the right tone. (Tip: Be sure to clue your guests in to the plants’ meanings! See #3 below…)

2) Perennials vs. Annuals. While any botanical gift can be considered “sustainable,” choosing a perennial plant (one that comes back year after year rather than dying after a single season) will truly give guests a memento to remember your wedding. Every time the plant blooms in the years to come, close friends will remember that flower in relationship to your blessed day.

3) Personalize it! Whether you select inexpensive, earthy terracotta pots or eclectic vintage tins to contain the floral gifts, add a personalized tag for a little pizzazz! Incorporate your new married monogram and the wedding date on one side. And don’t forget to provide guests with simple instructions for transplanting the favor at home.

Beach & Outdoor Wedding Fun

Greetings from lovely Hilton Head Island! Yes, TGK’s intrepid blogger is making the most of my online status by blogging via the beach this week! And with the gorgeous weather, I am finding all sorts of inspiration for those upcoming summer weddings.

I love the idea of providing guests with flip flops for your beach wedding! This photo of the galvanized buckets with various standard flop sizes posted on coordinated stationery placards came from the Knot’s Wedding Obsessions blog. Place these buckets at the top of the boardwalk so guests can slip into easy beach shoes for a waterside ceremony or reception. And even if you’re not having a beachside wedding, any outdoor summer wedding would benefit from this fun, casual nod for guests to kick off their shoes, relax, and boogie on the dance floor! Best of all, they make a great take-home favor.

Oriental Trading has basic white flip flops for $4 a pair, but I’d hunt around at Wal-Mart and Old Navy for a deal. If your wedding isn’t until next summer, wait until the end of the season and see if you can find a real steal!

How to know what sizes to order? Ask your guests on the wedding reply card, of course! Chicken or fish? Size 7 or 11? Or to make it simpler, order a range of standard sizes with a few larger and smaller sizes thrown in for good measure. Flip flops are pretty forgiving! And are one of those small details that make weddings unforgettable.

Wedding Etiquette: The Death of the RSVP

It’s My Party, and You Have to Answer

By RAND RICHARDS COOPER

Hartford

HERE’S an etiquette experiment for you: E-mail an invitation for a party, one month out, to 45 friends. Request an R.S.V.P. Provide a follow-up e-mail message, two weeks later, politely reminding them to get back to you.

How many will?

My experiment arose from plans for an evening of food, drink and literature, with readings by myself and two other writers, at a restaurant. Not exactly a drop-in-if-you’re-around kind of thing, so I asked friends to R.S.V.P. My initial message brought in a dozen responses, and the follow-up a few more, but days before the event I had a paltry 23. Not 23 who planned to come, but 23 who had bothered to respond. Half my invitees had blown me off. Why? I wasn’t peddling life insurance, after all.

Asking around, I discovered that the phenomenon is widespread. One friend of mine e-mailed invitations to a baby shower, and a third of the recipients failed to respond. Another announced a happy hour at her house and received a dozen yeses — only to find her party besieged by 35 people.

What’s preventing us from executing this basic social task? Is it the medium? Do Evites somehow not feel like “real” invitations? Is it our busy lives, so overbooked and overwhelmed we’ve drawn up the castle gates? Don’t invite me out this month, I’m ensconced! Or is it simple rudeness? Try as I might to understand, I kept feeling dissed.

What’s clear is how hard the R.S.V.P. rubs against the grain of contemporary life. In requesting people to anchor a plan in the distant future of a month hence, you are demanding a kind of navigation that Americans increasingly do not practice. We prefer to remain flexy, solidifying our plans incrementally as the date approaches. Let’s talk tomorrow. I’ll call you when I’m on the road. Cellphones in hand, we microadjust our schedules as they unfold around us. We’re like the air traffic controllers of our own lives.

It wasn’t always so. A while ago I made a lunch date with an elderly couple. As the day approached with no subsequent corroboration, I felt a strange excitement. Would all three of us just show up? We did, and I realized that what I felt was a small nostalgic thrill over social arrangements that seemed straight out of Jane Austen.

But back to my party. The day before the big event, I sent a final e-mail message, thanking “the half of you who responded for helping keep the dying art of the R.S.V.P. alive.” This irked missive flushed out a final 10 hangdog respondents. But there remained a gang of 12 — the dirty dozen, the truly hardcore, fanatical nonresponders — who couldn’t even be shamed into R.S.V.P.ing.

In the end, perhaps they were merely following the French literally: Respond, if you please. Left over from a time when graciousness couched demands as requests, the R.S.V.P. no longer functions. I therefore propose an update, something still French but a bit more … frank — the R.V.O.M.:

Répondez Vite — ou Mourez!

For those friends of mine who plead a lack of high school French, allow me to translate. Respond Quickly, or Die!

We love when brides get creative with incorporating personalized details throughout their weddings! When we came across these amazing cakes created by our friends at Swank Cake Design here in Cary, North Carolina, we were instantly reminded of the petite budding flowers that grace our Cherry Blossom invitation. Consider providing your cake designer with an inspiration point, such as your wedding invitations, to give your event an extra level of customization and personality!

It's a Blue March

Last night, a movie called The Cove was awarded an Oscar for “Best Feature Documentary” film. It’s a gripping examination of a highly secretive annual dolphin massacre that takes place off the coast of Japan. The film was produced by the Oceanic Preservation Society, a non-profit organization founded by filmmakers, photographers, and eco-activists.

As animal lovers ourselves, we were astonished by the movie’s revelations about this horrific industry. So in support of OPS, we are launching a special “blue” March promotion! The Green Kangaroo will donate 5% of all blue sales for the remainder of March to the Oceanic Preservation Society.

Help build our fund by ordering something “blue” – literally! Blue orders contain one or more of the following:

• blue ink

• blue paper

• blue ribbon

• blue embellishments

We’ll feature some of the most lovely blue orders on the blog throughout the month, to provide you with inspiration! Just remember, to qualify for this promotion, orders must be submitted before March 31, 2010.
